Hi, everyone! We hope you are surviving the scorching summer.

We are introducing two books we bought for the adult students’ lending library.

One book is about travel English. We chose this one because it introduces 16 basic expressions and you just have to add a few words to them to make a sentence. For example:  “______, please.” After introducing this model, there are 30 sentences that use it, such as “Chicken, please,” “To London, please,” and “Separate checks, please.” It’s amazing how many things you can say with just one sentence model! This would be great practice to say what you want to say in a simple sentence. We often think in Japanese and try to translate that into English. Because you try to translate every single word in Japanese to English, it gets very difficult and you want to give up communicating. There are Japanese sentences on the left page and English sentences on the right. We recommend you try to make English sentences on your own first before you look at the English sentences. You’d be surprised how simply you can express yourself in English!

The other book is about prepositions. Prepositions are one of the most difficult things to learn for Japanese people. Besides the basic meanings and usages you learn in junior high school, there are so many ways to use prepositions and sometimes you just have to get used to how they are used by being exposed to English. This book is called “Learning Preposition in Ninja’s Motion.” Using illustrations of a ninja in action, it explains meanings and usages of prepositions. The illustrations help you understand prepositions more easily and intuitively. Again, in the practice part, Japanese sentences are written on the left pages so you can try making English sentences before you check the English sentences on the right page.

I personally quite like this layout because you can discover expressions you don’t usually use.

Please remember: there are various ways to express the same thing and the sentences introduced in books are not the only ways! You can even see how sentences are not translated word-by-word in this blog because they would sound unnatural. So, try expressing yourself with words you already know!

今日は大人の図書コーナー用に買った本を２冊紹介します。

１つは旅行英語の本です。この本では１６の基本表現を紹介しており、その表現に単語を足すだけでセンテンスが作れるようになるというものです。

例えば、”________, please”という表現。このパターンを紹介した後に、”Chicken, please.（チキンをお願いします。）”、”To London, please.（ロンドンまでお願いします。）”、”Separate checks, please.（勘定は別々でお願いします。）”などの例文が30文も載っています。１つのパターンでどれだけ色んなことが言えることか！

言いたい事をシンプルな文で言う練習をするのにとても良い本です。英語を話す時、日本語で考えたことを英語に訳そうとすること多いですよね。一字一句きっちり英語に訳そうとして、英語を話すのがすごく難しくなり、あきらめたくなってしまうこともあります。

この本は、左のページに日本語、右のページに英語というレイアウトになっています。右のページの英語を見る前に、日本語の意味する事をまず自分で英語にしてみるのがお勧めです。言いたい事がこんなにシンプルな文で表現できるなんて！と驚くこともあると思います。

もう１つは前置詞の本です。日本人にとって、前置詞は一番習得するのが難しいものの１つです。中学校で習う基本的な意味・使い方の他にもたくさんの使い方があり、たくさんの英語に触れることによって使い方に慣れていくしかないこともあります。

この本は「忍者で覚える前置詞」というタイトルで、忍者のイラストを使って前置詞の意味や使い方を説明してくれています。イラストがあることで、より簡単に、感覚的に理解することができます。そしてこの本でも練習のパートでは、右のページの英語を見る前に左の日本語を英語にする練習ができるようになっています。

私は、自分が普段使わない表現を発見できたりするので、個人的にこのレイアウトが割と好きです。

これだけは覚えておいて下さいね。

１つの事を表現するのに言い方は色々あります。本で紹介されているものだけが正しいのではありません。このブログでも英語と日本語を比べると、一字一句訳していないのがわかると思います。それをすると、不自然な英語／日本語になるからです。皆さんも、知っている単語や表現を使って言いたい事を言う練習を是非してみて下さい！
